FREEDOM FRIDAY | Don’t Miss the Whisper

My precious friend,

“And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” — 1 Kings 19:12

Have you ever been discouraged even after seeing God do wonderful things in your life?

Elijah had.

That is what makes this passage so deeply personal. Elijah was not a man who had never experienced the power of God. He had seen miracles. He had watched the fire fall from heaven. He had witnessed God answer prayer in ways few people ever had.

And yet now, this great prophet was tired. Discouraged. Afraid. He had withdrawn into a cave and reached one of the lowest moments of his life.

Perhaps you understand that feeling.

You can love God and still become weary. You can believe His promises and still have moments when you wonder what comes next. You can remember yesterday’s miracle and still need His reassurance today.

And I love what God did with Elijah.

God came to him.

The Lord told him to stand on the mountain because He was about to pass by. Then came a tremendous wind, so powerful that it tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks.

But the Lord was not in the wind.

Then came an earthquake.

But the Lord was not in the earthquake.

Then came the fire.

But the Lord was not in the fire.

And after all the noise, power, and drama came something entirely different:

A gentle whisper.

Sometimes when we are discouraged, we are looking for God to do something big.

“Lord, change everything!”

“Lord, open this door!”

“Lord, give me a miracle!”

“Lord, show me a sign!”

And certainly, our wonderful God can move mountains. He can open doors no man can shut. He can heal bodies, restore families, provide finances, and completely change circumstances in a moment.

But sometimes the answer we need most is not found in the earthquake.

Sometimes it comes in the quietness of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps today you are waiting for God to change your circumstances, while the Holy Spirit is quietly saying, “I am here.”

Perhaps you are asking Him to show you the entire road ahead, while He is whispering, “Trust Me with the next step.”

Perhaps you feel forgotten, and in the stillness He is saying, “I have not left you.”

My precious friend, do not mistake God’s quietness for God’s absence.

Some of the most precious moments I have ever experienced with the Lord have not been in great meetings or spectacular manifestations. They have come when I have been alone with Him—when everything became quiet and the beautiful Holy Spirit gently ministered to my heart.

If you are discouraged today, find that quiet place.

Turn off the noise. Open your Bible. Sit in His presence. You don’t have to give Him a long prayer. Simply say, “Holy Spirit, I need You. Speak to my heart.”

And then listen.

The same God who met Elijah at the entrance of that cave knows exactly where you are today. He knows your disappointment. He knows what has exhausted you. He knows the questions you haven’t told anyone. And He knows precisely what your heart needs to hear.
