Your Hedge of Protection P2

Where is the safest place for you to be today?

  • The days are short, so we must get the Gospel out now!

  • You protect our tomorrow by being a lover of the Gospel.

  • The safest place for anyone, first and foremost, is in God’s presence.

Last week, I shared a teaching from my heart to you about “Your Hedge of Protection.” You responded in such a wonderful way, so I’ve decided to go beyond that hedge of protection to reveal what God has available to you for protection, favor, and blessing.

In Old Testament times, people used stones to build hedges as the first line of defense for protection. The psalmist David spoke of an impenetrable hedge when he wrote, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust” (Psalm 18:2).

Inside this protective boundary, often stood a fort-like structure, a tower, that could withstand the fiercest of attacks. God refers to Himself this way: The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

Are you in distress? Poverty? Pain? Debt bondage? Are you fearful of the future? Are you in great danger? Then this is for you!

The Bible is filled with word pictures such as a hedge of protection and a strong tower to illustrate eternal principles.

In Old Testament times, these protections were needed, not just against human predators, but also against wild animals that were much more prevalent in the Middle East than they are today. The Bible mentions lions (Judges 14:5), wolves (Jeremiah 5:6), bears (1 Samuel 17:34), leopards (Hosea 13:7), and hyenas (Isaiah 13:22). Any sort of hedge, even dense thorn bushes, was not only a deterrent to “outside” predators but also a restraint to keep livestock inside a safe area.

And what’s the significance to you and me today?

A Place of Provision

A “strong tower” refers to much more than the typical watchtower that surrounded many ancient walled cities. During the time when Proverbs was written, a strong tower was a place of safe refuge, huge and heavily fortified, built with thick stone blocks. The tower’s large walled areas protected many soldiers and replacements.

And during ancient times, strong towers weren’t just built as a fortress of protection, but they were also used to hold huge amounts of food and supplies. Even during warfare, these fortresses housed ample storages of provisions that could outlast a prolonged siege.

David wrote:

From the end of the earth, I will cry to You,

When my heart is overwhelmed;

Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For You have been a shelter for me,

A strong tower from the enemy.

I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;

I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. (Psalm 61:2-4).

In this passage, the Hebrew word used for “LORD” is Jehovah or Yahweh, “my Lord God,” which occurs 6,823 times in the Old Testament.

God not only provides defense and protection for the righteous, but He is a covenant-keeping Yahweh who will never leave us, fail us, or forsake us. Glory to the name Jehovah!

Why does God provide us with a hedge of protection and a strong tower?

His love! God’s undying love for you and me is why He offers safety, provision, and blessing. Human love often fails, and even the best relationships fall short of the glory of God. But broken relationships and hurts should constantly point us to the One whose love will never falter or let us down.

Solomon, the son of David and one of the wisest, greatest kings of ancient Israel, certainly knew the life-and-death value of God’s protection. There are many references to this in His Holy Spirit-inspired writings (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon).

He wrote that our Lord’s true love is solid, strong, and sturdy. He pointed out that God even unfurls His banner of protective love over us, “waving overhead to protect and comfort us” (Song of Solomon 2:4, AM).

God’s love seals us (Song of Solomon 8:6), much like the promise found in the New Testament: “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:20-21).

His hedge of protection and strong tower shows His ownership over you and your loved ones when you seek shelter, blessing, and provision in Him!

Your Protection

The safest place for anyone, first and foremost, is in God’s presence, living within His fortress tower. There, the righteous are promised protection:

Praise the Lord!

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,

Who delights greatly in His commandments.

His descendants will be mighty on earth;

The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches will be in his house,

And his righteousness endures forever. (Psalm 112:1-3)

And our protection is ensured with a seed:

Cast your bread upon the waters,

For you will find it after many days.

Give a serving to seven, and also to eight,

For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. (Ecclesiastes 11:1-2).

“Bread” is the Gospel. “Waters” represents the world. In other words, giving to spread the Gospel to the world protects your future against evil! You protect our tomorrow by being a lover of the Gospel.

As a giver toward the Gospel, you have rights and protections provided by God Himself. In fact, the apostle Paul wrote,

“Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:18-19).

Giving to the Gospel is your protection for the future! Giving toward the Gospel puts you in a safe place financially!

Your Future

Storms will come, even if you give and are righteous, but when that happens, you can choose to not focus on the storms: “He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap” (Ecclesiastes 11:4).

Look to God!

Keep sowing, even when storms come. Keep your eyes on Him, for He is your hedge of protection and strong tower! If you want to protect your tomorrow, God has provided you with the secret: Fill your storehouse in the strong tower by continually planting your seed toward the Gospel. Don’t miss it!

Do you want protection that is endless and bountiful? God supplies the seed. All you need is a sowing heart, and God will use what you plant: “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” (2 Corinthians 9:6).

We give because it is God’s will. We give because it is His command! We give because it is His law. We give because the Lord has asked every believer to give. And the Lord Jesus assures us that when we give, we will surely receive.

Your Opportunity

When we give for the preaching of the Gospel, we don’t have to wait for the harvest. The harvest will be waiting for us! The harvest will come our way as surely as the sun will rise again tomorrow morning.

Be encouraged by David’s psalm that says, “I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.” (Psalm 37:25).

The Lord will take care of your needs, your children’s needs, and the needs of your family for generations to come. He will never forsake us—as long as you and your offspring obey the Lord and live righteously.

The days are short, so we must get the Gospel out now! I believe with all of my heart that harm to the unbeliever is on the way. The Scriptures tell us clearly that evil is coming to the wicked, but God’s people, who love and obey Him, will be protected. That is God’s Word!

I believe there will be people in the future who will lose everything because they disobeyed the Lord. But I also believe with all of my heart that you, as a believer, have nothing to worry about, because as you remain faithful, the Lord will protect you and bless you abundantly.

When we give toward the Gospel, we’re building a hedge of protection against the uncertain and chaotic future.

This is the time to prepare by sowing your seed. As you sow, you prepare for the blessings that will come upon your life tomorrow, no matter what comes. As you sow during this time of supernatural planting, the Lord, your strong tower, will surely send you a supernatural harvest and release protection over your life and finances, not only right now, but also in the future!

Your Key to the Future

The key to walking in financial victory now and in the future is our covenant relationship with God, for He promised, “My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips” (Psalm 89:34).

You are a covenant person, and God has promised to take care of you, even in times of famine and difficulty.

You have this guarantee,

“Day by day the Lord watches the good deeds of the godly and he prepares for them his forever-reward. Even in a time of disaster he will watch over them, and they will always have more than enough no matter what happens.” (Psalm 37:18-19, TPT).

As a covenant person today, run to the strong tower of refuge, provision, protection, and opportunity! Sow your seed in faith and believe the Lord to take care of you.

Wrap your faith around your seed and sow with excitement and expectation! Do not negotiate with the Lord but obey Him today. Be faithful to God, and He will never let you down.

Scripture promises,

“And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18).

The safest place for anyone is in God’s hands, hiding in His fortress, enjoying His supernatural supply!

Precious friend, you are in this world, but you don’t belong to it, nor are you controlled by it! The world’s economy will continue to rise and fall, but your position as a believer is one of strength, power, and ever-increasing prosperity.
