“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow…”
— Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

There are moments in life when we discover just how important it is to have someone walking beside us.

Ecclesiastes tells us plainly, “Two are better than one.”

Why?

Because life was never designed to be lived in isolation.

God places people in our lives for strength, encouragement, prayer, wisdom, and support. There are victories we celebrate together, burdens we carry together, and seasons we survive because someone was willing to stand beside us when we did not have the strength to stand alone.

The Scripture says:

“For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”

Notice that it does not say if one ever struggles. It says when they fall.

There will be difficult moments.

There will be days when your faith feels tested. There will be seasons when disappointment comes, when circumstances become heavy, or when you simply need someone to remind you of what God has already spoken.

That is why godly relationships are so precious.

We All Need Someone Who Will Lift Us

Sometimes the greatest ministry you can offer another person is simply refusing to leave them on the ground.

You may not have the answer to their situation.

You may not be able to change what happened.

You may not understand everything they are facing.

But you can pray.

You can encourage.

You can remind them of God’s promises.

You can stand beside them until they have the strength to stand again.

And there will also come a day when you will need that same grace.

We often admire independence, but Scripture continually points us toward community.

Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up his hands.

David needed Jonathan.

Paul surrounded himself with men and women who labored alongside him in the Gospel.

Even the disciples were sent out by Jesus two by two.

There is strength in agreement.

There is strength in fellowship.

There is strength when believers refuse to allow one another to walk through difficult seasons alone.

Don’t Isolate Yourself in a Difficult Season

One of the greatest dangers during seasons of discouragement is the temptation to withdraw.

When people are hurting, they often isolate themselves.

They stop talking.

They stop reaching out.

Sometimes they even stop praying with others.

But isolation can magnify what fellowship helps us overcome.

The enemy would love to convince you that nobody understands, nobody cares, and you must carry everything by yourself.

But God’s Word declares something different:

“Two are better than one.”

God may already have placed someone in your life who can pray with you, encourage you, and help strengthen your faith.

Allow them to.

You do not have to carry every burden alone.

Become the Person Who Lifts Others

This Scripture is not only about finding someone who will lift you.

It is also a call to become someone who lifts others.

Look around you.

Who needs encouragement today?

Who has been unusually quiet?

Who is walking through a difficult season?

Who needs someone to say, “I am praying for you. I believe God is going to bring you through this.”

Never underestimate what one word of encouragement can accomplish.

A phone call can strengthen someone.

A prayer can restore hope.

A simple act of kindness can remind a person that God has not forgotten them.

Sometimes God answers someone’s prayer by sending another believer to stand beside them.

There Is a Reward in Walking Together

Ecclesiastes says that when two labor together, “they have a good reward for their labour.”

Together, we can accomplish what would be much harder alone.

Together, we can pray.

Together, we can worship.

Together, we can serve.

Together, we can carry the Gospel.

Together, we can strengthen one another until the work God has placed before us is finished.

So today, thank God for the people He has placed in your life.

And ask Him to make you the kind of person who strengthens others.

Because there may come a moment when someone beside you stumbles.

And when they do, may your hands be ready to lift them.

And when your own strength begins to fail, may God surround you with faithful people who will do the same for you.

Two truly are better than one.

A Prayer

Father, thank You for the people You have placed in my life. Help me never to take godly relationships for granted. Give me the humility to receive encouragement when I need it and the compassion to recognize when someone else needs to be lifted. Make me faithful in prayer, generous in encouragement, and sensitive to those who may be struggling around me. Let my life strengthen others, and surround me with people who will continually point me toward You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
