Throughout Scripture, we see a powerful principle: when we honor God first, we acknowledge that everything we have comes from Him. Honoring God is not simply an outward action—it is an expression of faith, gratitude, and trust in His provision.
The Bible teaches us that honoring God with our lives and our resources began long before the Law was given. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob walked by faith and understood the importance of honoring God with what He had entrusted to them. Their relationship with God was built on trust, obedience, and recognition of His goodness.
When the children of Israel came out of Egypt, they were delivered by the grace of God. They applied the blood to their doorposts and believed His promise. Their freedom came through faith before the Law was given. Later, the Law was given to reveal God’s holiness and to point people back to their need for faith and dependence on Him.
Under the New Covenant, the principle remains: God desires to be first in our hearts. Jesus taught that our devotion to God must come above everything else, and the Apostle Paul encouraged believers to honor God by giving with purpose and understanding.
Paul wrote:
“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him…”
— 1 Corinthians 16:2 (KJV)
This principle requires us to recognize God’s blessings and respond with a heart of honor. It is not about obligation—it is about gratitude. When we acknowledge God as our source, we demonstrate our trust in His faithfulness.
Proverbs reminds us of this promise:
“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

Honoring God first positions our hearts to receive His wisdom, direction, and blessing. It reminds us that our security is not found in what we possess, but in the One who provides.
As we put God first in every area of our lives, we can walk with confidence knowing that He is faithful. He is the God who supplies, strengthens, and sustains His people.
