Today’s Key Scripture

“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

— Matthew 6:13

True, effective, and victorious prayer and fellowship begin with God the Father and end with God the Father, for He is the “Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last” (Revelation 22:13).

John Wesley once wrote of this passage, “The principal desire of a Christian’s heart being the glory of God…therefore this prayer comprehends all his desires. Eternal life is the certain consequence, or rather completion of holiness.” To be more like Him is our purpose!

The word kingdom speaks of God’s reign or dominion. Power points to Almighty God’s ability and desire to accomplish what we ask. Glory refers to God’s glory, not our honor, for our purpose in life as believers is to help speak God’s kingdom throughout the earth.

Amen is added for emphasis. It is a word with Hebrew origins, and it means “verily” or “so be it.” Today we might say “certainly!” It signifies firmness and security. It points to God’s faithfulness.

From beginning to end, our desire in prayer is to declare God as all in all. As we come into His presence with this purpose, praise and worship will be lifted up, God’s guidance will be imparted to us, and prayers will be answered—even as we are drawn into a more intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit!

Amen. So be it!

A Prayer for Today

Father God, thank You for loving me, even when I was unlovable. Thank You for providing me salvation through Your Son, even when I was lost in sin. My heart is grateful. Please guide me in Your path of righteousness, according to Your will and Your glory. Help me to become more like Christ, bringing light and hope to a world too often filled with darkness and hopelessness. I pray this in the name above all names, Jesus, amen.
