Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

—Psalm 37:4

In several of the previous devotionals, I dealt with the danger of prayerlessness. The causes are very clear-cut:

  • No delight in God
  • No knowledge of God
  • Turning away from God

If prayer does not drive sin out of your life, sin will drive prayer out! That is why delighting in the Lord is a choice we make everyday. This means spending time with Him: “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7, KJV).

Martin Luther once said, “Prayer is the most important thing in my life. If I should neglect prayer for a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.”

Overcoming prayerlessness requires an acknowledgement that God holds the answers to all of life’s challenges.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln said it clearly: “I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day.”

When it is hardest to pray, we ought to pray hardest!

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, I’m so grateful that You encourage me in Your Word to delight myself in You. I thank You the time I am able to spend alone with You. Today, I desire to be in Your presence. Help me to be a good reflection of You. Help me to remember the homeless, the needy, those struck with tragedies, and especially so many who don’t know You as personal Savior and Lord. Help me to never take Your presence or my calling be commonplace or ignored, but give me the strength, wisdom, and concern for others that You show me every day as I commune with You. I pray all this in Your Name, Amen!
