Today’s Key Scripture
“I delight to do Your will, O my God and Your law is within my heart.”
— Psalm 40:8
There are two important attitudes you and I must have when we approach God as we seek guidance and direction. These attitudes are crucial in creating an atmosphere conducive to hearing God’s voice:
- Humility—After confessing to God his sin with Bathsheba, King David prayed: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). If you want to know God’s will for your life, humble yourself before Him.
- Reverence—“Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him,” wrote King David (Psalm 34:9). We come boldly before the throne, but we do so with respect knowing that even though He is our Father, He is God Almighty.
Without humility and reverence, we tend to act like the spiritually undiscerning people whom Jesus described as “seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand” (Matthew 13:13).
May God reveal Himself to you as you spend more time with Him. Open your heart to Him with humility and reverence. Seek to hear His voice. Then be ready to say, as did young Samuel, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears” (1 Samuel 3:9).
Listen! What do you hear?
A Prayer for Today
Father in heaven, You do all things well! I magnify Your name, because You never fail! I confess that too often my time spent in prayer becomes a one-sided conversation. Today, I want to listen better. Your Word says I should be “swift to hear” (James 1:19). I commit to setting aside time during prayer to just be still and hear what You are saying. Help me as I embrace these quiet moments. I want to hear from You in a fresh new way. I surrender all to You and am confident that You know best for every step I take. Be glorified today through my thoughts, words, and deeds, as I listen. I pray this in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
