Today’s Key Scripture (all references NKJV unless otherwise noted:

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

—1 Corinthians 14:2

We hear from heaven because God’s Spirit is at work! As the Spirit of God enters, He begins to remove our weaknesses. He takes hold of our infirmities. Then suddenly, in the presence of the Almighty, true prayer is released.

When the Holy Ghost descends, prayer in the Spirit begins. Some people get confused, for there is a vast difference between praying in the Spirit and praying with the Spirit.

  • Praying in the Spirit is praying in unison to the will of God. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (Ephesians 6:18, KJV).
  • Praying with the Spirit is speaking in tongues: “I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15, KJV).

Do not minimize the importance of tongues. Long before Pentecost, God spoke through Isaiah about speaking to His people through “another tongue” (Isaiah 28:11).

When you pray in tongues, satan doesn’t understand. It’s a mystery to him. You are communicating directly with the Lord!

Pray in the Spirit, and pray with the Spirit, knowing “If we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14-15).

A Prayer for Today:

Precious Lord, I am hungry for more of You. I seek to pray in You and with You. You are my hope. Your word tells me to hold fast to the confession of my hope without wavering because You are faithful and will deliver on Your promises. Lord, I am holding fast, refusing to waver, seeking the vast difference between my strength and Your power. I’m trusting in Your promises. Fill me with Your fullness and help me to follow You today in everything I do. Amen!
