Today’s Key Scripture

“The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’ So the Lord said, ‘If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, “Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.’”

— Luke 17:5-6

During His earthly ministry, our Lord Jesus used many common objects to teach kingdom principles.

In this passage, the disciples came to Him asking for more faith. Jesus responded by showing that even a tiny amount of faith could do amazing things.

In another instance, He used the tiny seed to illustrate the same principle:

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)

Humanly speaking, using faith the size of a speck to move huge objects like trees and mountains seems absurd. But God desires to build supernatural faith. He doesn’t seek to make things impossible or out of our reach. That’s why the Lord used simple illustrations.

So, how do we obtain faith, even as small as a mustard seed?

The Word tells us, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

As you hear from God, and as you spend time in prayer, you can see your faith grow into a powerful force: “Whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive” (Matthew 21:22).

A Prayer for Today

Father, give me mustard seed faith today. Grow it into a powerful force as I follow You in all my ways. Help me to understand You better, even as I seek to see through Your eyes. Thank You for You love, forgiveness, righteousness, compassion, goodness, and glory. May I always seek to reflect You through my life. Guide my steps today as I trust my life to You, Lord. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
