Today’s Key Scripture
“God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out.
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
How great your faithfulness!
I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).
He’s all I’ve got left.”
— Lamentations 3:22-23, MSG
If there is one word that is synonymous with the anointing of the Holy Spirit, it is oil. The two are linked, not just symbolically, but spiritually. This oil of anointing comes not through our own power, but through spending time in God’s lovely presence.
Oil is something you can actually feel and touch, and the anointing resembles it in so many ways. Olive oil has a beautiful fragrance when it is fresh. However, beware when it is old. There are few things worse than the smell of rancid oil. It is horrible!
Likewise, there is a glorious aroma about God’s people when they are freshly filled with the Spirit. It is like a sweet perfume spoken of by King Solomon: “Who is this coming out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the merchant’s fragrant powders?” (Song of Solomon 3:6).
Many believers testify that when they move into God’s presence, it is as if they have entered a flower garden in full bloom.
God’s reservoir of anointing has never been exhausted. His supply has never been interrupted. It is always fresh to those who seek the Lord, ready for a new anointing, desirous of fresh oil.
And it never runs out or spoils as long as you stay in His presence!
A Prayer for Today
Gracious Father, as I finish this month of December and look forward to beginning a new year, help me grow closer to You every day. Lord, your Word says that You are the hope for the hopeless. Without You, I am lost and drifting. So I’m clinging to You with outreached hands. Grant me faith that trusts and believes in You as my only hope. Fill me up with Your daily assurance and an indestructible spiritual lifeline. You know in the deepest parts of my heart that there are dreams and goals I cannot see fulfilled without Your strength, guidance, and empowerment. I give them to You today, even as I once again surrender everything to You. You are my hope, my only hope. And I pray all these things in Jesus’ name, amen.
