Today’s Key Scripture

“You will make your prayer to Him, He will hear you.”

— Job 22:27

During World War I, a British soldier was caught one night while creeping secretively back to his tent from a nearby wooded area. He was immediately hauled before his commanding officer and charged with holding communications with the enemy. The man pleaded that he had gone into the woods to pray. That was his only defense.

“Have you been in the habit of spending hours in private prayer?” his officer asked roughly.

“Yes, sir.”

“Then get down on your knees and pray now like you’ve never prayed before!” the commander ordered.

The young man knew he could be shot at sunrise for the crime he was accused of committing. He knelt and poured out his soul in prayer that could have only been inspired by the Holy Spirit.

“You may go,” the officer said in hushed tones after the soldier finished praying. “I believe your story. If you hadn’t drilled often, you couldn’t have done so well at review.”

The young man’s life was saved because he had prepared for some time, not knowing what challenges he would face.

I pray that believers today would “drill” more often. Our lives would be so different.

A Prayer for Today

Dear Lord, thank You for Your abundant, abounding grace. I’m so glad that Your grace—Your unmerited favor—means that I don’t have to earn a single drop of the mighty river of grace that flows freely over me today. Help me to walk in the path of Your love, Your righteousness, and Your grace. And help me to remember how crucial it is for me to spend time with You regularly, drinking freely from the water of life. And when the challenges in life come, help me to be prepared for whatever happens because of my time with You every day. In the precious name of Jesus, I pray, amen.
