Today’s Key Scripture

“David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, ‘Please bring the ephod here to me.’ And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.”

— 1 Samuel 30:7

In Old Testament times, God spoke in many different ways. Remember, the Holy Spirit was not poured out upon Israel in that day, as it was after Pentecost. Men and women knew the voice of God mostly through the prophets.

God also revealed His will through other instruments. For example, we read how David asked that the ephod be brought to him so he could determine whether or not to pursue the Amalekites (1 Samuel 30:7-8).

The ephod is what the priests wore as they came into the presence of Almighty God (Exodus 28:4). And in a special pouch on the breastplate of the garment were two stones (one white and the other black) called the Urim and Thummim. It is said that the stones would brighten, or grow dim, according to God’s yes or no.

David came into agreement with Abiathar, the high priest, asking him to bring the special garment. He needed the priest at such a time. If David had not known the power of agreement he would not have called for Abiathar to help seek the Lord’s counsel.

Coming into agreement made the difference in the battle that followed.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for the power of agreement today as throughout Your Word. I long for You and for strength in unity with other believers. I desire to have my life filled with Your Word. I treasure Your Word that speaks to the power of being in one accord, and I ask for a fresh revelation of Your Word every day as I spend time studying your statutes. Open my eyes to all that You have for me to do in this life. Fill my heart with Your wisdom and insight. Most of all, I ask You to fill me with Your love and Your peace that passes all understanding as I work with others for Your kingdom. I pray all this in the name that is above all names, Jesus, amen.
