The Crucial Power of Intercessory Prayer
“We need more believers today who understand the need for selfless, anointed intercessory prayer, for being filled with the Holy Spirit, and for praying with a heavenly boldness!”
What is intercession? It is sacrificial prayer. It focuses less on you and more on others. It asks for God’s power to be unleashed in the world.
Intercessory prayer involves spiritual warfare. Our battle is not against flesh and blood, and it is not fought with carnal weapons. We win these battles on our knees:
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds: casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
Through intercessory prayer, you can subdue the forces of hell and render Satan powerless, because “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds!”
Through Intercession, We Can Change History!
Through prayer and intercession, you can rescue your children from disaster and pray them into the will of God.
Through intercession, you can touch your community and impact your world, for God has placed all that He is and has at your disposal in prayer. No principality or power can stand against the person who knows how to pray.
In fact, one of the greatest “secrets” of getting answers to your prayers, including intercessory prayers, comes through understanding the power of praying with the promises of God, especially when you pray in agreement with other believers.
It’s a principle that we see demonstrated throughout Scripture.
Moses and Jacob claimed the promises of the Lord. So did Peter and John. After the two disciples had been threatened by the Pharisees not to preach in the name of Christ, they gathered with fellow believers and said:
Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth and the sea, and all that in them is: who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the nations rage, and the people imagine [plot] vain things? The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. (Acts 4:24-26)
God knew what His Word proclaimed, yet Peter made a point of repeating it again: Lord, you said ‘Why do the heathen rage?’ You declared that ‘the rulers would stand up’ … You said, Lord.
Peter understood intercessory prayer and praying the promises of God:
“And, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy child Jesus.” (Acts 4:29-30)
What was the result?
“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:31)
Praying with Boldness
We need more believers today who understand the need for selfless, anointed intercessory prayer, for being filled with the Holy Spirit, and for praying with a heavenly boldness!
The name of our Lord Jesus has given each believer the authority to be victorious in prayer! The Bible declares that anything we ask will be accomplished when we pray in Jesus’ name. These powerful promises come from the lips of the Master Teacher Himself:
- “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you” (John 16:23).
- “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it” (John 14:14).
- “If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:19-20).
- When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action. And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there” (Matthew 18:19-20 MSG).
We as believers have been given unlimited use of Jesus’ name. When we pray in Jesus’ name, we go in His authority and in His place, professing His power.
We must pray in faith and confidence. Jesus said:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24)
When Jesus said “verily, verily,” He meant, “I guarantee it, I give you My word. Whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you!”
That’s the true core of intercessory prayer!
