Today’s Key Scripture (all references NKJV unless otherwise noted:

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

— Hebrews 5:12-14

Milk is the starting place. In 1 Peter 2:2 that as newborn believers, you should desire the “sincere” or “pure” milk of the Word. However, as you grow in grace and seek to become a more effective prayer warrior, God desires for you to mature to the nourishment of solid food. Let me share three quick thoughts:

  1. The writer of Hebrews is exhorting believers to grow up, for you cannot know God’s will and you cannot grow up as Christians if you lack the knowledge and nourishment found in God’s Word.
  2. Likewise, you cannot know the will of God unless there is spiritual growth in your life. There is no such thing as standing still.
  3. Strong meat or solid food helps you to mature, to understand God better, and to communicated with Him more effectively.

To every born-again believer God gives a measure of faith (see Romans 12:3). Through exercising your faith in God—knowing God, His word, and His ways—you become increasingly able to discern God’s will.

Let me encourage you to spend extra time feeding on God’s Word. Memorize it. Study it. Confess it during your prayer and communion time. And most of all, seek to apply it to every area of your life.

A Prayer for Today:

God, I cherish the pure milk from Your Word, but I long to gain nourishment from the solid meat in the Bible. Help me to keep my focus on growing and maturing in You. Direct my heart and mind towards You as I gain strength through spending time in Your Word. Anoint me for Your purpose and glory. Give me confidence to do Your works, knowing that in whatever I do, I seek to do everything in Your Name and Your will. Thank You for Your powerful Presence in my life. I’m so grateful that I can be assured that Your heart is towards me and that You and intimately concerned in all that I do, and I thank You. In Your Name I pray, Amen!
