Today’s Key Scripture

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

— Hebrews 5:12-14

Milk is the starting place. In 1 Peter 2:2 we learn that newborn believers should desire the “pure” or “sincere” milk of the Word. However, as we grow in grace and seek to become more effective prayer warriors, God wants us to mature to the nourishment of solid food. Let me share three quick thoughts:

  1. The writer of Hebrews is exhorting believers to grow up, for we cannot know God’s will or grow up as Christians if we lack the knowledge and nourishment found in God’s Word.
  2. Likewise, we cannot know the will of God unless there is spiritual growth in our life. There is no such thing as standing still.
  3. “Solid food” helps us mature, to understand God better, and to communicate with Him more effectively.

To every born-again believer, God gives a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). Through exercising our faith in God—knowing God, His Word, and His ways—we become increasingly able to discern His will.

I encourage you to spend extra time feeding on God’s Word today. Memorize it. Study it. Confess it during your prayer and communion time. And most of all, seek to apply it to every area of your life.

A Prayer for Today

God, I cherish the pure milk from Your Word, but I long to gain nourishment from the solid food in the Bible. Help me to keep my focus on growing and maturing in You. Direct my heart and mind toward You as I gain strength through spending time in Your Word. Anoint me for Your purpose and glory. Give me confidence to do Your works, knowing that in whatever I do, I seek to do everything in Your name and Your will. Thank You for Your powerful presence in my life. I’m so grateful that I can be assured that Your heart is toward me and that You are intimately concerned about all I do, and I thank You. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
