Where Is God in Times of Tragedy?

Having a spiritual life and a relationship with God means that even in times of tragedy and difficulty, we can trust in God for comfort, hope, and peace.

Faith in God works not only in the good times, but also in the hard times. Trusting in Him becomes something that is invaluable during the worst moments in life. Even in unthinkable circumstances, God will ease our pain and bring healing as His love surrounds us.

As you choose to seek and allow God’s comfort to pour over you, He promises to engulf you with encouragement and hope.

Where is God in tragedy? He is right here to help you cope and heal, even as He eases your pain and brings peace to your life. Beyond that, He will lead you into a place of forgiveness where healing truly begins.

Scriptures of Peace and Comfort

Let the following scriptures from God’s Word bring you comfort today:

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

— John 14:27

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

— Philippians 4:7

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

— Psalm 91:1-2

I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.

— Psalm 40:1-3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.

— 1 Peter 1:3-4

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I hope in Him!”

— Lamentations 3:21-24

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

— 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear.

— Psalm 46:1-2
