Today’s Key Scripture
“Those who have turned back from following the Lord, and have not sought the Lord, nor inquired of Him.”
— Zephaniah 1:6
When a believer turns from God, on purpose or not, there will be no prayer.
The main reason people quit praying is because they begin to revert back to their old life, thereby ignoring the Lord by not seeking Him. As a result, they are taking a dangerous risk, as Zephaniah the prophet cautioned long ago.
The turning point is a result of embracing the world and breaking off communication with God. If you return to your old friends, revert to your former habits, or go back to your old environment, you are likely to stop praying.
Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758), who played a critical role in the revival fires that swept through the American Colonies, once said:
If you live in the neglect of secret prayer, you show your good will to neglect all the worship of God.… He that will not pray where none but God seeth him, manifestly doth not pray at all out of respect to God, or regard to his all-seeing eye, and therefore doth in effect cast off all prayer. And he that casts off prayer, in effect casts off all the worship of God, of which prayer is the principal duty.
Don’t turn from the Lord. Seek Him daily with all your heart.
A Prayer for Today
Father, I seek You today with all my heart, all my soul, and all my life. Receive my thanks for the abundant life You have given me. I adore You. I exalt every facet of Your nature. I long to know You better, to see You through spiritual eyes, and to understand You in ways I can’t begin to humanly imagine. Lead me in Your path. Draw me deeper into Your presence as I spend more and more time with You. Please accept my prayer of adoration, dear Lord, for it is in Jesus’ name that I lift my heart to You, amen.
