Today’s Key Scripture
“Open my eyes so I can see what You show me of Your miracle-wonders.”
— Psalm 119:18, MSG
Why pray? It takes a commitment of time and energy. So why do it?
There are many valuable results of prayer given throughout the Bible, including these three from Psalm 119:
- Prayer brings a revelation of self. The psalmist wrote, “Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed when I look into all Your commandments.” (Psalm 119:5-6). As you begin to pray, you see yourself in light of who God is. When God meets you, you see your sin. Then a revelation of self is always followed by a revelation of God and His mercy.
- Prayer brings cleansing: “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word” (verse 9). In prayer, God reveals hidden or forgotten sins. As you confess them, He cleanses you from all sin, allowing you to then come boldly to the throne of grace in prayer with a pure heart.
- Prayer reveals the Word of God. The psalmist prayed for God to open his eyes (verse 18). The truth of God’s Word equips us to defeat the Enemy.
Why pray?
Prayer and spending time in His presence is the only way to live a victorious life in Christ Jesus.
A Prayer for Today
Father God, You are Creator of all things good. When I am awakened every morning, help me to welcome You into every area of my life. Just as the light of a new day brightens my eyes, so I pray that You would illuminate my heart with the light of Your Word and the enlightenment of Your Holy Spirit. Today, empower me for the work You have set for me to do. Help me to walk in obedience and faith as I strive to follow Your will in every word and deed. I pray this in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
