Today’s Key Scripture

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”

— Ephesians 6:18

The Holy Spirit desires to lead each of us into the seven revelations of prayer—confession, supplication, adoration, communion, intercession, praise, and thanksgiving.

We begin by declaring the sovereignty and power of God, and then we may present our needs to Him. This is called supplication.

After the apostle Paul told us to put on the whole armor of God (see Ephesians 6:11-17), he focused on the need for prayer and supplication. Literally, this means to take our requests to the Lord. Don’t hesitate to say, “Lord, here is the need I am bringing to You today.”

Paul wrote, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

Martin Luther once said, “Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness.”

Unfortunately, many people end their time of prayer abruptly, never moving beyond supplication. They present their requests and say, “Well, I feel better now. That’s it. I am finished.” Then they rush to turn on the news, read a newspaper, or phone a friend, not realizing that God is still waiting to answer in ways far beyond anything they can imagine.

A Prayer for Today

Father God, today I want to worship You with my life. Let my prayers be lifted up to You as I strive to be anxious for nothing, trusting You with my life and my needs. Help me to lay hold of Your willingness to give Your best to me in Your time and for Your purpose. You alone know what’s best for me. Help me to trust You more—that is my greatest need. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
