Today’s Key Scripture

“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.’”

— Luke 11:1

One of the greatest requests in the Word of God is the one made to the Lord Jesus by His disciples—“Lord, teach us to pray”—a cry that still echoes in the hearts of those who long to follow Him.

Why did the disciples make such a fundamental request? It is because of the great and mighty hunger that dwelled in their hearts for the knowledge of God.

That should be all believers’ great desire because effective prayer is God’s invitation into His limitlessness. Prayer crosses the border of time into eternity.

So in response to the disciples’ request, “teach us to pray,” the answer given by the Lord Jesus so long ago is as fresh and applicable right now as it was when He first offered the model prayer. He knew that a good example is worth a thousand sermons. He lived it daily. As a result, we not only have His teaching that came as a result of the disciples’ request but we have a model prayer and a powerful pattern we can follow.

In the next 10 devotionals, we’ll look briefly at our Master’s model prayer. I pray that God will touch your life through this study.

A Prayer for Today

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” (Matthew 6:9-13).
