Key Scripture

“David inquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?’ And He answered him, ‘Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.’”

— 1 Samuel 30:8

The priest knew what to tell David as God spoke to him. The two men agreed in prayer and the answer came.

David and his armies not only chased the enemy from the land, but he and his men “recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives. And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all” (1 Samuel 30:18-19).

A remarkable part of this story is that David continued to foster agreement among his people, distributing the spoils of war among all of them—“they shall share alike” (1 Samuel 30:24).

In addition, he sent part of the spoils as an offering to the elders throughout the land: “He sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, ‘Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the Lord” (1 Samuel 30:26).

There is power in agreement.

God has all power in heaven and on earth, yet He watches and waits for His people to seek Him through the force of unity.

A Prayer for Today

O Lord, I want to be used by You. Guard my heart against trying to do everything by myself. Help me understand and treasure the power of agreement. Along the way, I ask You to keep me in the center of Your will so I don’t get in the way of anything You are doing in my life. From early in the morning and throughout the day and night, may I seek Your insight continually, Teach me to trust You as I pray. Grant that I may increasingly live pleasing in your sight, seeking Your will, interceding for others, working with others, living in harmony, and giving all glory to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
