Key Scripture

“Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.”

— Exodus 17:10

When the children of Israel were on their journey in the wilderness, they battled more than hunger and thirst. There were physical enemies, great armies who attacked them, including the Amalekites, a mighty and fierce people, well-trained warriors, who attacked the weary children of Israel: “Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim” (Exodus 17:8).

Moses put his disciple Joshua in charge of the troops who were to fight against the Amalekites: “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand” (Exodus 17:9).

Joshua followed the command and Moses watched the battle from his high vantage point. With him were his brother, Aaron, and a friend named Hur.

Moses was not resting, far from it!

He was standing, alert, and undoubtedly praying for victory. There were times that Moses prayed by himself, but apparently, when it came to fighting the Amalekites, he knew he needed help.

What happened during the ensuing battle stands as a powerful illustration of the power of agreement.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for the power of agreement in my life. I’m so grateful that I don’t always have to stand alone while in a spiritual battle. Help me understand the necessity of being in one accord while facing battles in the spirit, mind, and body. Thank You for the work You have already done through me as I seek to live a life of purity, praise, and thanksgiving. I choose to go deeper with You. You alone are my Hope, my Refuge, my Safety, and my Lord. I submit my will to You today. Help me remember that You always know best. And I pray this with deep gratitude in my heart in Jesus’ precious name, amen.
