Key Scripture

“Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”

— Exodus 17:12

As the children of Israel went into battle against the attacking Amalekites, Scripture records, “And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed” (Exodus 17:11).

Why were Aaron and Hur standing alongside Moses?

To support him, not just physically, but spiritually, as well.

As a result, “Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword” (Exodus 17:13).

Those who were standing with Moses were not distant or casual acquaintances. The hearts of these three men were beating as one. Aaron was a blood relative, and Hur was the son of Caleb, one of Moses’ generals (1 Chronicles 2:19). Moses relied on these two men for spiritual leadership (Exodus 24:14).

Whom did Moses turn to when he needed assistance? He chose warriors he could rely upon, those who had proven their faith and loyalty.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, my God, I know I am powerless without Your divine intervention every day of my life. And I am weak without fellow believers standing with me in agreement. I need You, and I need them with me in one accord. Help me live accordingly. With Your strength, grant that I may increasingly live pleasing in your sight, seeking Your will, and giving all glory to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
