Today’s Key Scripture

“He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit, he speaks mysteries.”

— 1 Corinthians 14:2

One of the deeper dimensions of the Holy Spirit involves our tongue. Through the Holy Spirit, we can have a prayer language that allows us to speak directly to the Father. Speaking mysteries in the spirit means that no man or demon understands what is being said—only God.

Paul cherished this private communication with the Father and said, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (1 Corinthians 14:18).

Here are five biblical reasons (among many) why we should pray in tongues:

  1. Edification. “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself” (1 Corinthians 14:4).
  2. Preparation for prophecy. “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied” (1 Corinthians 14:5).
  3. Worship. “I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15).
  4. Rest to the weary. “You may cause the weary to rest” (Isaiah 28:12).
  5. Refreshing. Isaiah, stating that God will use tongues to speak to His people, says, “This is the refreshing” (Isaiah 28:12).

At Pentecost, believers spoke in “tongues” that were languages understood by people from various nations (Acts 2:7-8). However, the gift of the Spirit allows us to speak in a heavenly tongue!

If you haven’t already, I urge you to move into this wondrous deeper dimension.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for not only the higher and deeper things but for the practical guidelines in living every day in You, even with my tongue. Help me to see that many times I don’t have what I need because I simply don’t ask. I’m grateful for You, Father, for I know You are concerned that I have my needs met. And I’m grateful that whether You answer my requests with “Yes,” “No,” or “Not yet,” help me remember that You always know best. As I continually submit my will to Yours, I know I will be joyful in whatever You give me. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
