Today’s Key Scripture

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”

— 1 John 5:14-15

The power of constant contact with the Lord is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power resides in the God to whom we are praying. In 1 John 5:14-15, we learn that we can have full confidence approaching God, for He hears and desires to answer when we pray in agreement with His Word and His will.

His answers are always in our best interest. When we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God’s will, God responds powerfully. However, we cannot access powerful contact with Him by using “magic” formulas or the “eloquent” prayers.

We don’t have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, “When you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:7-8).

Prayer is communicating with God. All we have to do is ask God for His help. Scripture reminds us, “They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm So that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven” (Psalm 107:28-30). There is power in prayer.

A Prayer for Today

Father God, thank You for the privilege of staying in constant contact with You. Enlighten my heart and mind with the light of Your Word. Protect me from wrong thinking; instead, help me focus on You who are perfect, great in mercy, and longsuffering toward me. I want to know You better and understand Your will. Fill me with Your pure teaching. May I glorify You in word and deed today? I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
