Today’s Key Scripture
“Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].”
— Colossians 3:2, amp
The closer we get to God, the further we move away from the things of the world. As we set our affections on things above, going through the process of being refined by God into His own image, we connect with heaven, losing the desire for things below.
It’s that simple, but it is a process that is uncommon and costly.
That process is described in Zechariah: “I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; and each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God’” (Zechariah 13:9).
The refining fire changes us forever. It also changes our prayer life forever.
When we are more connected to heavenly things, we become less connected to earthly things. When we lose the desire for the world, it is because something is happening in our spirit. And this can only happen through prayer and spending intimate time with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
If you desire a deeper spiritual walk with God, you get there on your knees (though the position of your body is not nearly as important as the condition of your heart). You don’t get there with human knowledge. You don’t get there with ability. You get there with prayer.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, at the start of this day, help me to honor and glorify You above all else. Open and enlighten the eyes of my heart that I might see You in all of Your glory. Help me to understand You better, especially how You desire to work through my life. Give me wisdom to make the best choices. Fill me with the utter desire to pursue You and Your presence more than anything else in this world. I’m eternally grateful that You are greater than anything that comes against me today. I ask You to lead me, guide me, and direct my steps. Cover me with Your protection and envelope me with Your love. And I pray all these things in the name of Jesus, Your precious Son who died for me that I can live for all eternity with You, amen.
